Information About Each Side

Ipswich Town and Liverpool have a long history of meetings, with the clubs having faced each other 62 times previously in league football.

The most recent Premier League meetings came during Ipswich's previous spell in the top flight in 2024/25. Liverpool won both matches, recording a 2-0 victory at Portman Road before completing a 4-1 win at Anfield.

Ipswich were relegated at the end of that campaign but immediately bounced back by finishing second in the Championship in 2025/26. Liverpool, meanwhile, enter the new season under a different head coach after finishing fifth last term.

Ipswich Town

Ipswich Town return to the Premier League after just one season in the Championship. The Tractor Boys secured automatic promotion on the final day of the 2025/26 campaign with a 3-0 victory over Queens Park Rangers, finishing second behind Coventry City.

The promotion completed an impressive recovery following relegation from the Premier League in 2024/25. Ipswich had spent 17 years in the Championship before returning to the top flight in 2024, only to drop straight back down after finishing 19th.

Kieran McKenna played a major role in Ipswich's rise, guiding the club from League One to the Championship and then into the Premier League. However, he stepped down in June 2026 after five years in charge.

Gary O'Neil has now taken over at Portman Road. The former Bournemouth and Wolverhampton Wanderers manager will be tasked with keeping Ipswich in the Premier League and building on the momentum created by their immediate return to the top flight.

The visit of Liverpool is one of the biggest fixtures on Ipswich's 2026/27 schedule, giving supporters an early opportunity to see their promoted side test themselves against one of English football's biggest clubs.

Liverpool

Liverpool begin the 2026/27 Premier League season under new head coach Andoni Iraola.

Iraola replaced Arne Slot in the summer after three successful seasons at Bournemouth, where he guided the Cherries to a sixth-place Premier League finish and European qualification in his final campaign.

Slot's two seasons at Liverpool included the club's 20th English league title in 2024/25. Liverpool finished fifth in 2025/26, however, leading to a change in the dugout as the Reds look to challenge for major honours again.

Iraola brings an attacking, high-intensity style to Anfield and will be looking to establish his methods quickly during his first season in charge.

The Liverpool squad has also undergone significant changes during the summer. Mohamed Salah, Andy Robertson and Ibrahima Konate have left the club, while the Reds have added new talent as they reshape the squad for another campaign competing at domestic and European level.

The trip to Portman Road provides Liverpool supporters with an early chance to see Iraola's team in a Premier League away environment, while the atmosphere should be particularly strong for Ipswich's first home campaign back in the top flight.
