This great clubs roots can be traced back a long way; to the 1890s to be precise. Sampdoria as they are now known was actually formed in 1946 from the merger of two existing sports clubs Sampierdarenese and Andrea Doria to become Sampdoria. Sampdoria have just one Scudetto to their name and they have won the Coppa Italia four times (1985, 1988, 1989, and 1994) and one Italian Super Cup.
Their biggest European success came when they won the Cup Winners' Cup in 1990. They also reached the European Cup final in 1992 only to lose against Barcelona in extra time. After this successful stint the club moved up and down between divisions. On return to Serie A their side have achieved consecutive midtable finishes and to this day have a good reputation of producing quality young players. Shkodran Mustafi, Mauro Icardi, Andrea Poli and Simone Zaza all started out here and were later sold on for significant transfer fees.
