Sunderland FC Rivalries

Sunderland AFC’s biggest and most passionate rivalry is with Newcastle United – famously known as the Tyne–Wear Derby. This clash is one of the fiercest in English football. Matches between Sunderland and Newcastle are usually high-energy to say the least, often defining the season for both sets of supporters, regardless of league position.

Sunderland also share rivalries with other North East clubs, such as Middlesbrough. This is sometimes referred to as the Tees–Wear Derby. This is not as intense as matches against Newcastle, but games with Boro still carry plenty of passion.

There have also been competitive historic rivalries with clubs such as Leeds United and Manchester United, often during periods when they were battling at the top of English football.

For Sunderland fans, nothing compares to the atmosphere and importance of facing Newcastle United.

Sunderland: Stadium Guide

The 48,000 seater stadium takes pride of place in Wearside and is an iconic landmark for the city since Sunderland moved there in 1997. The Stadium of Light creates an intense atmosphere on matchday for both home and away supporters and is a great day out for football supporters looking to book Sunderland match tickets.

Football Ticket Pad tickets are divided into two categories. Longside and Shortside. Longside are seats which are located on the longside of the ground down the touchline and across the halfway line, a perfect choice for fans wanting the best views.

Shortside tickets are those which are seated behind the goals and despite being slightly cheaper, they are often in parts of the stadium with the most atmosphere. Below, we take a look at the ticket options available for Football Ticket Pad customers browsing seats at The Stadium of Light.

Sunderland Ticket Types

Season / Members Cards

Sunderland AFC Season / Members cards allow fans to sit in pre-booked seats which belong to Sunderland club members in various parts of the stadium. When customers purchase a season/members card ticket they will be sent their match ticket in the post to a postal address provided in their payment details.

Customers will receive their Sunderland tickets in plenty of time and will be notified when their tickets have been confirmed and once they have been dispatched. Customers then scan their card at the turnstile shown on the card to gain entry to the stadium and access their seat. The cards must then be returned in a pre-paid envelope once the match has been played.

E-tickets

Only provided to customers who have purchased Sunderland VIP Hospitality tickets at Stadium of Light. Once Football Ticket Pad customers have purchased their ticket they will be emailed their e-ticket as an attachment which can be accessed from your electronic device and presented upon entry to the stadium.

Paper Tickets

Once you have purchased your Sunderland tickets, your paper tickets are dispatched to the billing address provided in your payment details. Customers are notified once their tickets have been confirmed and once their tickets have been sent. Customers often receive their Sunderland tickets 3-4 days prior to the match.

Stadium of Light Seating

Longside Upper: These seats offer some of the best views from the upper level of the East and West stands at the Stadium of Light, giving a clear view of both ends of the pitch. The Longside Upper area in the West Stand is known as the stadium’s top seating area. If you want the best possible views, Longside Upper tickets are ideal, even if they’re a bit further from the action.

Longside Lower: Located on the lower level of both the East and West stands, these seats are considered some of the best in the stadium outside of VIP areas. The seats in the West Stand are near the players’ tunnel and the dugout, putting fans right in the middle of the action with a level view of the game. You can buy seats together, and every ticket purchased from Football Ticket Pad comes with a 100% guarantee.

Shortside Upper: If you’re looking for a lively atmosphere and plenty of noise, the Shortside seats are the best choice at the Stadium of Light. For Sunderland fans, the Shortside Upper is behind the goal in the South Stand, on the upper level. The South Stand is also known as the ‘Family Stand’, making it a great spot for a family day out or for taking young children to the match.

Shortside Lower: These seats are in the lower level of the North and South stands, behind the goals. This area often has a very energetic atmosphere, especially when Sunderland is attacking your end of the pitch. Fans are seated very close to the action, which helps create a lively and noisy experience inside the Stadium of Light.

VIP Hospitality: Football Ticket Pad customers can also enjoy premium hospitality options when buying their Sunderland tickets. This includes behind-the-scenes access, food and drinks, and comfortable seats to watch the game. Many of these packages are available in the West Stand and include areas like the Black Cats Bar, Montgomery Suite, and James Hargreaves Suite.

Away Section: We have a limited number of tickets for the away team’s supporters in the upper level of the North Stand for some of the biggest matches. When browsing Sunderland tickets at the Stadium of Light, you can choose ‘Away Section’ to sit in this area. Please note, this section is reserved exclusively for away team fans.
