Founded in 1904 by employees of the German pharmaceutical company Bayer; this is where the club draws its name. Originally they were a sports club whose members also participated in athletics, gymnastics, basketball and other sports. It was only in 1999 the football department was separated from the sports club and is now a separate entity. Although they haven't won any league titles domestically Bayer Leverkusen have on one occasion lifted the Uefa cup.
